We’re thrilled to welcome Dr. Nikki Coomer to the Mountain Song Community School Board of Directors. Dr. Coomer brings a powerful blend of academic expertise, classroom experience, and a deep commitment to inclusive, student-centered education.
Dr. Coomer’s background includes over a decade of hands-on teaching and leadership experience in public schools across the country, serving as special education teacher in early childhood and early elementary, an interventional specialist for students labeled as having emotional and behavioral disorders, and as a district-wide behavior specialist for a large urban school district in the Midwest. Before moving to Colorado, she worked for the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights Technical Assistance Center. Her research focuses on disability justice, relational pedagogy, and educational equity, and her work has been published widely in journals and academic texts. She also serves as Managing Editor of Multiple Voices: Disability, Race, and Language Intersections in Special Education and is active in several national education organizations.
She’s currently an Assistant Professor of Education at Colorado College, and was selected as the Lloyd E. Worner Teacher of the Year and Winter 2024 Commencement Speaker, a testament to the impact she’s had on campus. She is also the current holder of the Manya Whitaker Endowed Professorhip.
Dr. Coomer’s passion for equity, inclusion, and meaningful learning aligns beautifully with our mission at Mountain Song. She’s a fantastic addition to our board—and we’re so lucky to have her in our community.
